Join the Purdue Crew Parents’ Club!
Please read the following letter from the President of the Parents’ Club.
Crew may be a totally new adventure for your son or daughter. It entails an amazing amount of work on their part, but it may well be one of the most valuable and treasured activities they become involved in at Purdue. It’s a new experience for parents, too, and Parents’ Club is there to support students as well as family members and friends that show up at regattas and other team activities.
Perhaps the most startling thing about Crew (after one gets over the length of the boats!) is food consumption. Very few student athletes will work as hard as your son or daughter and the food calories are nothing short of inhaled. One crew member said (about Spring Break spent at Clemson University), “It was the first time in my life I ate until my stomach hurt, and I was still hungry.”
Parents’ Club shows up at every regatta (there are about 9), and they coordinate food supplies, providing crew and family with hot meals and treats. It’s a form of “tailgating,” but instead of in a parking lot, it’s by water and with an entire team. It’s fun, but it also calls for volunteers.
There are choices when it comes to volunteering. One can: – donate money or food supplies – coordinate, plan, and/or shop for food not donated – be the grill master – keep track of finance – plan for Senior gifts (usually blankets) – sell T-shirts – email information and respond to questions. Yes, we need some more help on this committee each year!
